3D Printed Staff of Ra Headpiece
Well, here we are…under quarantine. What better way to keep yourself busy than make some movie props! If you’ve seen my Chachapoyan Fertility Idol post, you know that I am an Indiana Jones fan. In addition to the fertility idol, the Staff of Ra headpiece was also a key prop in the film. I’ve wanted to make the headpiece since finishing the fertility idol. Alas, the time has come to make the Staff of Ra headpiece and hit the map room in Tanis. So grab your whip, your fedora, some filament, and some paint!
Fortunately for us, we don’t need to travel to a seedy bar in Nepal to pick up the headpiece. Its available for free on Thingiverse.com! Because of the detail and beveled Hebrew type, this piece is prone to ghosting on the 3D printer, so it is recommended to bring the print speed down to 20-25mm/s. The photos below show the difference in print quality when using 20mm/s vs 50mm/s. Z axis support bars will also help improve print quality.
Besides paint, and we’ll go over 4 different painting options, there are a few other accessories that are required to finish the project. You’ll need:
12mm red rhinestones – available from Amazon
antique brass costume necklace – available from Amazon
6″ x 6″ paver stone – available from Lowes
I documented my project in video format.
As previously mentioned, 4 different gold finishing techniques were used in this build.
